LONG SHORT STORY

Books and reading have long been central to Jenn Johnston's life as companions, as a means of connecting with others, and as a way of understanding the world. Working with clay has offered her much the same. Through this honest, humble medium, she has found connection, creativity, and a sense of calm. Long Story Short grew from a desire to unite these two enduring passions, transforming words that have deeply resonated with her into permanent forms in clay.

The works in this exhibition feature text drawn from literature that has remained with Johnston over time passages exploring love and loss, friendship, nourishment, the passage of time, and the wonder of the natural world. Some quotations speak directly and boldly to the viewer, while others invite quiet reflection. In each work, language and form are inseparable, with the shape and presence of each piece guided by the words it carries.

Texture, colour, and form are central to Johnston's practice, with text serving as the sole adornment. Left unglazed, the clay retains its natural honesty, allowing both the material and the written word to speak for themselves.

For Johnston, making is an act of finding calm, while reading is a way of discovering meaning. Through these works, she hopes to offer viewers something of both.
